Coach Morrell, entering his 15th year as head coach and his 19th overall at Butler Community College, has become the standard by which other junior college coaches are judged.

Morrell has led Butler to an overall record of 146-19 (.884), the second-best total among active coaches in the NJCAA and the highest all-time Region VI winning percentage. He has a Jayhawk Conference record of 93-5 (.949). In the Region VI playoffs, Morrell's teams have been nearly unbeatable, compiling a record of 30-3 (.909). Morrell has led Butler to three national championships, including back-to-back national titles in 2007 and 2008.

No other coach has led a program to back-to-back national titles twice, as the Grizzlies have done in 1998 and 1999, as well as 2007 and 2008. Morrell also guided the Grizzlies to the NJCAA and JC Gridwire titles in 2003 with another perfect 12-0 record, while playing in four other national title games (2001, 2004, 2010, 2012). Morrell has played for a national title every other season (seven times in 14 years).

Morrell has currently led the Grizzlies to four straight Jayhawk Conference titles, as well as eight straight conference titles between 2001 and 2008, the longest such streak in the history of the conference. During Morrell's 14 years as head coach, the Grizzlies have won at least 10 games 11 times and have played in bowl games all but one season.

Morrell has had 68 athletes garner NJCAA All-American honors and has more than 150 student athletes sign division 1-A/1-AA scholarships. Morrell has been named KJCCC Coach of the Year five times (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008). During the 2003 national championship season, Morrell was named coach of the year by the NJCAA, American Community College Football Coaches Association, American Football Monthly Magazine and the JUCO Football Network.

Morrell began his coaching career at Butler as the offensive line coach in 1996, and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1998. He has coached 16 All-American offensive lineman. Butler has won five national titles (1998, 1999, 2003, 200, 20087) and gone 180-28 (.865) with Morrell on staff.
Morrell earned an A.A. in Science from Butler Community College where he was also an All-American offensive lineman. He earned a B.S. in Physical Education from Fort Hays State. Morrell is married to the former Jessica Borth. They have two children, Dylan and Madelyn.
