Smith scores three times as Butler rolls past Air Force Prep

The No. 3-ranked Butler football team continued to pile up points, scoring seven touchdowns in a 49-6 non-conference victory over Air Force Prep at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex on Saturday.

It is the fifth time in six games this season that Butler has scored 49 points or more. As they have in all but one game this season, the Grizzlies scored on their first offensive possession. Air Force Prep was forced to punt on the game's opening possession, and a short kick gave Butler the ball inside AFP territory.

Six plays later, Dreamius Smith scored on a nine-yard touchdown run, putting Butler ahead 7-0 less than four minutes into the contest.

Butler would score three touchdowns in the second quarter, the first coming on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Billy Cosh to Javess Blue. Dreamius Smith and Terrence Allen would both score on two-yard touchdowns runs and Butler would take a 28-0 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, Dreamius Smith added a third touchdown run, this one from one yard out, and Derrick Thomas would score on a three-yard run

Butler's final touchdown came early in the fourth quarter on a 27-yard pass from Cosh to Blue, their second touchdown connection of the game.

Air Force scored a touchdown on a one-yard run by Alex Lakes with 2:56 left in the game. That score broke a streak of nine scoreless quarters posted by the Butler defense, dating back to the second quarter of an 84-7 win at Independence two weeks earlier.

Dreamius Smith led Butler's rushing attack with 15 carries for 92 yards and three touchdowns. He has score nine touchdowns in the past three weeks and leads the NJCAA with 13 rushing touchdowns this season.

Billy Cosh completed 21 of 33 passing attempts with two touchdowns and 295 yards passing. He threw one interception and two touchdowns, both to Javess Blue, who had six receptions for 95 yards.

Defensively, Blake Bean had eight tackles to lead the Grizzlies and also had an interception that was returned 32 yards.

Butler is now 6-0 on the season, still at 4-0 in conference play. A big matchup will take place next Saturday at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex when Garden City brings its 4-1 records to El Dorado for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
