Butler volleyball outside hitter Avery DeLong and football quarterback Jayson Zardavets have been selected as the White Eagle Credit Union Athletes of the Week for the week of October 7th through October 13th, 2024.
Avery DeLong (Volleyball)
DeLong, a sophomore from Overland Park, Kan., was Butler's top offensive player in a week that saw the Grizzlies play three conference matches in one week. On the week she led Butler with 34 kills (3.40 per set), landing them at a .443 clip. DeLong landed a team-high tying 13 kills in a loss to No. 5 Barton as well as a team-high 13 kills in a win over Seward where she hit .524. In the win over Seward, she also added nine digs. On the season, DeLong ranks second on the team with 272 kills, 2.40 per set.
Jayson Zardavets (Football)
Zardavets, a true freshman from Manor, Texas, took over for starting quarterback Mason McHugh at the beginning of the second quarter and played the rest of the game, helping lead the Grizzlies to victory on the road at Highland. It was the first action of his collegiate career, and he finished 10-of-22 for 120 yards and a touchdown, also rushing eight times for 34 yards. Zardavets tossed a 42-yard touchdown to Nick Brown down the seam at the end of the third quarter that saw Butler regain the lead, 13-10. It was Butler's only touchdown of the game. Zardavets had an impressive scramble the play before the touchdown for eight yards, picking up a crucial first down.
