The Butler Grizzlies split a doubleheader with the Cloud County Thunderbirds at McDonald Stadium on Thursday, snapping a seven game Thunderbird win streak with a 4-2 win in game one, before losing game two 13-11.
Game One
Braxton Hyde was the star of game one, as he pitched six innings, giving up two runs and allowing just two hits as he held a high powered Thunderbird offense in check. Hyde was credited with the win, his second of the season. Andrew Wisner came on in the seventh and preserved the save, his sixth of the year.
It was a pitcher's duel and both offenses struggled to score, and the Grizzlies found only two hits, but Jackson Syring drove in two of the Grizzlies' four runs, which proved to be enough for the win. The win snapped the Cloud winning streak and was just the second time the Thunderbirds have lost on the road.
Game Two
Cloud County's high powered offense came alive in the second game of the doubleheader. Cloud came into the game leading the conference in runs, RBIs, and extra base hits, and they made it count. The Thunderbirds scored multiple runs in the first four innings and totaled 13 runs on 14 hits.
The Grizzlies tried to mount a comeback, scoring three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth. Paul Schoenfield hit a two run blast in the ninth inning with two outs to keep the Grizzlies alive, but they could not come all the way back.
The split will put the Grizzlies' record at 18-11, and 8-6 in conference. They'll head to Concordia to try to win the series on Saturday.
