EL DORADO, Kan. – Butler Community College athletic director Mike Helmer announced the hiring of Deneen Parker as the next head coach of the Grizzly women's basketball program on Thursday afternoon.
Thursday marks the beginning of a new era for Butler women's basketball. After leading the Grizzlies for 18 seasons and now serving as Butler's athletic director, Helmer has selected a familiar and trusted colleague to take the reins.
"I've known Coach Parker for 25 years, and it has been a privilege to watch her coach the game," Helmer said. "Her track record of success, commitment to excellence, and ability to build strong team culture make her the perfect fit for our program."
Parker arrives at Butler following her most recent role as Associate Head Coach at Southern Methodist University (SMU), where she helped guide the Mustangs to multiple postseason appearances and mentored numerous all‑conference performers. Her coaching career spans more than two decades and includes impactful stops at Houston, Indiana State, and Northwestern State, along with two extended stints at SMU.
"I'm excited to lead Butler Women's basketball and build on a championship foundation," said Parker. "Our culture will be defined by A.C.T.—Accountability, Confidence, and Teamwork—as we compete, grow and support one another every day."
Parker first joined the SMU staff in August 1995, spending 21 seasons on the Hilltop and helping lead the Mustangs to 10 postseason appearances, including five NCAA Tournament berths and five WNIT appearances. She played a key role in establishing a winning tradition at SMU, contributing to conference tournament championships in 1999 (WAC) and 2008 (C‑USA), as well as regular‑season titles in 2000 (WAC), 2009 (C‑USA), and 2013 (C‑USA).
After three seasons as Associate Head Coach at Northwestern State, Parker spent the 2019–20 season at Indiana State before joining the University of Houston for two years. She returned to SMU in 2022, where she served through the 2024–25 season. In her first year back, SMU finished 17–13 and earned its second consecutive WNIT appearance—the program's first back‑to‑back postseason run since 2014 and 2015. The Mustangs also ranked second in scoring defense in the AAC, holding opponents to 58.3 points per game, with three players finishing in the top 10 of the league in four statistical categories.
Before beginning her coaching career, Parker was a standout at Stephen F. Austin State University (1990–94). A four‑year letterwinner, she was named the 1993–94 Athlete of the Year, earned two Southland Conference Player of the Year awards, and was a two‑time District VI Kodak All‑American. Her teams won the Southland Conference championship and reached the NCAA Sweet 16 all four years. She was inducted into the SFA Hall of Fame in 2010.
Parker also competed on the gold‑medal‑winning South team at the 1990–91 U.S. Olympic Sports Festival. After playing professionally overseas, she returned to Texas in 1994 and began coaching youth basketball in Arlington.
Parker earned her bachelor's degree in communications with a minor in marketing from SFA in 1994.
