EL DORADO, Kan. – No. 20 Butler scored early and often in a 4-0 rout of the Barton Cougars Saturday at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.
The Grizzlies (2-4-2, 1-1-0) snapped a winless streak that lasted six matches and earned their first win since August 21, a 4-2 win against Rose State.
Coming off a frustrating shutout, Butler's offense struck early when Isabel Sandoval punched one past the Cougar keeper to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the contest.
Sandoval nearly notched her second goal of the game just five minutes later, but the Barton goalie turned away her follow-up chance.
Barton's first solid chance to score came with just under 13 minutes to play in the first half off a corner kick, but Butler keeper Millie Robshaw-Charlesworth punched away the attempt to keep the Grizzlies in front.
Soon after the save, Butler's Charlotte Long sent a free kick into the 18-yard box where London Ingram fought through the claws of three Cougar defenders, knifing a ball just past the keeper to give Butler a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half.
After the halftime break, Butler quickly fired another goal into the net, as Amiyah Hamilton-Thompson cashed in from 30 yards out to increase the Butler advantage to 3-0 just 30 seconds into the second frame.
Soon after, Tyesha Daniels was taken down in the box, resulting in a penalty shot. Eva Preister cashed in on the opportunity, pushing a ball just beyond the Barton goalie's reach to give the Grizzlies a 4-0 lead with 39 minutes left in the match.
The 4-0 score held the rest of the way, as the Grizzlies cruised to a win in their home opener over Barton.
Robshaw-Charlesworth (2-4-2) earned a clean sheet for the match, making seven saves in the shutout win.
Next up, the Grizzlies head to Arkansas City, Kan., for a clash with No. 11 Cowley on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 5:00 PM at Cowley Soccer Complex.
