EL DORADO, Kan. – The Butler Grizzlies softball team split their doubleheader with Seward County on Saturday from Doug Chance Field.
The Grizzlies (18-14, 12-6 KJCCC) defeated Seward (14-26, 6-19) in game one of the doubleheader 9-1 in a five-inning run rule but lost to the Saints 7-5 in game two.
Game 1 (5 inn.) – Butler 9, Seward 1
The Grizzlies had a strong start to their day, defeating Seward 9-1 in five innings in game one. Butler controlled the contest, amassing 10 hits in 25 at bats while holding Seward to just one hit in 16 at bats.
Leading 1-0 in the bottom half of the third, Kate Free hit a two-run homer to left field, scoring Haely Hagemann to push the Grizzlies advantage to 3-0. Seward got on the board in the fourth after a bases loaded hit by pitch, scoring the Saints runner at third and trimming the deficit to 5-1. Butler pushed their lead even further when Addison Chapman singled through the left side, scoring Free and Hagemann.
Butler put the game to bed in the bottom of the 5th when Kyler Demel singled to left field to score Lizzy Lassley to end the game in five innings.
Addison Chapman (W, 5-3) threw all five innings in the win for the Grizzlies. Chapman allowed just one hit and one earned run and struck out 10 batters.
Game 2 (7 inn.) – Seward 7, Butler 5
The Grizzlies fell behind early in game two, as Seward took a 5-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Butler attempted a comeback, as Emillee Stofferahn hit two home runs in the 2nd and 4th innings to cut the Seward lead to 5-4. In the top half of the 5th, Seward's Taryn Golden hit a 2 RBI single up the middle to push their lead to 7-4. DeShawnna Bryant hit a solo homer in the 6th to make the score 7-5, but the Grizzlies went three up and three down in the 7th, giving Seward their first win over the Grizzlies since 2017.
Anistyn Marcotte (L, 5-4) earned the start in the circle but suffered the loss for the Grizzlies. Marcotte threw 1.2 innings and allowed four hits and five earned runs. Ellie Randall came in for relief and threw 5.1 innings and allowed three hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out three batters.
Next up: The Grizzlies will be back at Doug Chance Field on Wednesday to face the Barton Cougars at 1 and 3 p.m.
