The Butler Grizzlies dropped their first game of the season on Sunday, falling in heartbreaking fashion to No. 8 Hill College due to a goal with .22 seconds left in regulation as Butler saw their three game winning streak snapped in their home opener on Sunday.
The two teams were deadlocked at the break and the match between two top 10 teams destined for overtime before a shot from just outside of the box found it's way past Grizzly goalkeeper Kyrah Klumpp in the 89th minute. It was a heartbreaker for Klumpp, as the Butler goalkeeper had kept the team in the game previously with a penalty save, her second of the season.
The Grizzlies totaled 19 shots on the day, including nine on target, and they came close to finding the go ahead goal several times but just couldn't quite find the net, and they were made to pay for it in the waking seconds.
"I thought we created enough chances to win the game, and it's cruel that we had three or four that we just couldn't tuck in," head Coach Adam Hunter said.
The loss drops Butler to 3-1 with all four matches coming against ranked opponents. The Grizzlies will shift their focus to conference action this week, starting with a midweek trip to Chanute for a match with Neosho on Wednesday as Butler looks to start their quest to repeat as KJCCC champions.
